DOONANNY BUILD ADVENTURE

Posted on: April 24th, 2012 Start the Conversation!

My annual pilgrimage to the Butch Anthony’s Doonanny in Seale, Alabama is one of the most important events of my “art year”.  For the ninth years running, I have gathered with a group of people in the woods of wonder to help grow this beautiful little micro-festival.  This year I was able to call on some Camp Design Build Adventure alumnus, Dan Dyer and Liz Gutierrez (and her partner David) to continue the development of the TEXAS CAMP at the Doonanny.   I packed some basic plumbing supplies, my two top propane cooker, and the 20′x20′ circus tent on the back of the Adventure trailer and go to New Orleans on Sunday, then arrive in Seale, Alabama (fast time) on Monday evening.  Dan and I started Tuesday morning with the development of the “camp kitchen” and “outdoor shower” (and a pit latrine, deep in the woods).  Wednesday and Thursday, we were working to get rafters and a roof on the “dock / bedroom”, with intermittent “guitar picking , bacon / egg eating, and beer drinking” breaks.  On Friday ,we started setting up the TEXAS MUSEUM and Liz’ Pop Up VIntage Shop …   and Friday night the party begins at the Possum Trot Auction and torrential down pour.  Saturday night Butch Anthony rode down a zip line and shot a flaming arrow into the “center” of the Doonanny and we all danced.  Sunday morning, we took it all down and packed it wither back on the trailer or under a tarp on the dock of the TEXAS CAMP.  Next year, I anticipate the move-in will be even easier and my hammock even more comfortable.        Mark your calendars for DOONANNY 2013.

ACVB AIRSTREAM TIMELAPSE

Posted on: March 12th, 2012 Start the Conversation!

The Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) “Airstream” is out working the crowd at the SXSW. We are very excited about the final product and the opportunity to work with ACVB’s team – so much so , that we are not going to show too many photos from midnight last week when it left us to go and get it’s “graphic wrap” …and need to wait a few days and get some photos (that do it justice) from out in the field (without the dirty adventurers and their tools thrown all around).   Or even better, go see it in person inside the Convention Center.

But we did select a bunch of photos from the “Bird Cam” (time lapse) camera that we had set up for the duration of the construction.  And then some select images from our project photographer / intern Adolfo Moreno.     Stay tuned for some more photos soon, and the animation that we hope to create from the 100′s for bird cam images.

Highlights are the bronze vinyl marine upholstery, wood inlay detailing similar to that of an acoustic guitar, under counter YETI coolers (x3), waxed paint grip steel walls,    and we really love the way the light comes through the perforated panels on the windows.

ACVB Airstream

We just started work on the Austin Convention and Visitor Bureau’s “Airstream”.  This 1975 Airstream will be set up and ready to go for SXSW in March so we have got a lot of work to do.  Austin musicians Dan Dyer and Jesse Ebaugh (Heartless Bastards) were on the demolition team, and the rest of the DBA team – Greg Tenenbown, Philip Burkhardt, Aldolfo Moreno and Adrian Larriva have been hard at work on the design, budget, and construction plan.   ACVB provided us with a handy “BirdCam” (time lapse camera) to document the renovation … so stay tuned.   Think old Airstream exterior with Musician Tour bus interior (yes , some funky cove lighting) .   Go.
