ADVENTURE MAILBOX

Posted on: May 12th, 2012 Start the Conversation!

Design Build Adventure Mailbox in Austin, Texas. New Mailbox needed to tie in visually with the existing landscape steel and at the same time provide ample room for the delivery of client’s coveted magazines. The mailbox also drew some inspiration from the Flatiron Building in NYC. Project Manager was Philip Burkhardt with Greg Tenenbown, Adrian Larriva, and Adolfo Moreno. Digitally – Cut Steel was provided by BBIITT.

DOONANNY BUILD ADVENTURE

Posted on: April 24th, 2012 Start the Conversation!

My annual pilgrimage to the Butch Anthony’s Doonanny in Seale, Alabama is one of the most important events of my “art year”.  For the ninth years running, I have gathered with a group of people in the woods of wonder to help grow this beautiful little micro-festival.  This year I was able to call on some Camp Design Build Adventure alumnus, Dan Dyer and Liz Gutierrez (and her partner David) to continue the development of the TEXAS CAMP at the Doonanny.   I packed some basic plumbing supplies, my two top propane cooker, and the 20′x20′ circus tent on the back of the Adventure trailer and go to New Orleans on Sunday, then arrive in Seale, Alabama (fast time) on Monday evening.  Dan and I started Tuesday morning with the development of the “camp kitchen” and “outdoor shower” (and a pit latrine, deep in the woods).  Wednesday and Thursday, we were working to get rafters and a roof on the “dock / bedroom”, with intermittent “guitar picking , bacon / egg eating, and beer drinking” breaks.  On Friday ,we started setting up the TEXAS MUSEUM and Liz’ Pop Up VIntage Shop …   and Friday night the party begins at the Possum Trot Auction and torrential down pour.  Saturday night Butch Anthony rode down a zip line and shot a flaming arrow into the “center” of the Doonanny and we all danced.  Sunday morning, we took it all down and packed it wither back on the trailer or under a tarp on the dock of the TEXAS CAMP.  Next year, I anticipate the move-in will be even easier and my hammock even more comfortable.        Mark your calendars for DOONANNY 2013.

HOLDING DOWN THE FORT

Posted on: March 30th, 2012 Start the Conversation!

While Jack was away in Seale, AL for Doonanny 2012, the rest of the DBA crew made sure everything at home base continued to run smoothly. The steel for the mailbox was picked up and delivered to the laser cutter, recycled oil pipes were prepped for a trellis in Georgetown, the Garden St. house had its clothing rack installed (with Greg’s detail), the chimney hat is ready for install, and Greg and I have a new reclaimed desk!

TITO’S ACL LIVE BAR INSTALL

Posted on: March 12th, 2012 Start the Conversation!

As the ACVB trailer left the yard, we hit the Tito’s ACL Live Mezzanine Bar really hard!  200 bottles of Tito’s, LED lights, custom guitar cases, and a reclaimed heart pine wood wrap to tie it all together.  When we showed up to do the install in hard hats and reflective vests, we were reminded that we “have to be finished by 5PM for a MAJOR event”.  Thanks to my friends at the Austin Film Society, I had to be finished by 5PM so I could go home and get dressed for the MAJOR event, the  Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards.  So I was able to work all day at ACL Live, then come back and admire (and support) the work with a double Tito’s Vodka and Grapefruit Juice  - right next to Hall of Fame inductee Danny Trejo.

El Cosmico / San Jose Stage (Full of Trans-Pecos Love and Music)

Posted on: September 29th, 2010 Start the Conversation!

For the first 3 weeks of September ,

the Design Build Adventure crew worked to
design, pre-fabricate, haul, and erect the new stage for the
El Cosmico Trans Pecos Festival of Music and Love -

On Sunday we did the same thing in reverse ,
take down , load, haul , and rest!   The new stage will
be put back up in March in the San Jose parking lot for SXSJ -

This could not be possible without our team – Quentin Hughes (at Hotel San Jose),
Jonathan Davidson (Jon Doe) and Gray Garmon in the shop and the field, nor without
structural design assistance from Lester Germanio (P.E.) , and Joyce Chen
who was in charge of the drawings …

The system really tested Design Build Adventure in new ways -
forced to make the stage light enough for two people to carry in pieces, short enough
to fit on a trailer (or two) , strong enough for Marfa winds, and sexy enough for
Liz Lambert .

The real hero is the 800lb capacity brake winches that mount temporarily to the columns
and lift the trusses into place -

2″ recycled oil pipe columns, screw jack feet, 1.5 inch top and bottom chord trusses w/
3/4″ bar, bolted connections, 20′ cedar 2×6 joists , and a canvas roof, backdrop, and skirt

More photos as they come -
