Jack Sanders' Design Build Adventure

Jack Sanders

Jack Sanders' built work explores the intersection of design and place, drawing from the interrelationships between people, material, climate, music, food, and art specific to each project's region. His artwork follows a similar path as an exploration of process in the form of on-location sketches and imagery collections that are later transformed into drawings, collages and etchings that document the spirit of Design Build Adventure.

Jack has been involved in several large scale art installations including CO2 LED, a solar powered public art project in Arlington, Virginia; the integrated artwork along the six-mile Lance Armstrong Bikeway (LAB) in Austin, Texas; and a lighting installation made out of 500 Tito's Handmade Vodka bottles at the Austin City Limits Moody Theater.

Since 2005, Jack has been collaborating with Liz Lambert and her Bunkhouse Management team on a variety of hotel projects including the design and construction of El Cosmico, a vintage trailer, yurt, and teepee hotel in Marfa, Texas; metalwork design and fabrication for San Antonio's Hotel Havana; and an innovative outdoor stage for Austin's Hotel San Jose.

In addition to his work with Bunkhouse, Jack has developed a wide range of residential projects. Whether its one of his intuitive "Sandlot" renovations or the design and construction of a private retreat, Jack's singular method and emphasis on process ensures an inspired outcome for any project, no matter the scale.

Jack received his Masters of Architecture from The University of Texas at Austin and his Bachelors of Architecture from Auburn University, where he studied with Samuel "Sambo" Mockbee at the Rural Studio. His senior thesis, The Newbern Baseball Club, a sculptural backstop for the 100-year-old sandlot baseball club, represented the Rural Studio at the 2002 Whitney Biennial in New York. Sanders' work at the Rural Studio has been exhibited worldwide and is featured in the books Rural Studio: Samuel Mockbee and an Architecture of Decency and Proceed and Be Bold: The Rural Studio After Mockbee, both published by the Princeton Architectural Press.

Jack co-produced a feature-length documentary on Mockbee and his impact on the education of young architects. Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio premiered at South by Southwest Film Festival in 2010 and has since broadcast nationally on PBS as well as at universities, museums, and theaters around the world.

Jack has been a visiting lecturer and studio instructor at Auburn University's Rural Studio, Mississippi State University, and the University of Texas at Austin. He has also led several design build summer studios with Axis Mundi in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.

He lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and adventure partner Ann Tucker of AT Studio and their 11-year-old chocolate lab, Daryl.
